Concrete : The movement towards a phase of sustainability

Cement Production & its Environmental Impact

Portland cement or clinker, a key constituent in concrete, has been designated as a major greenhouse gas pollutant. Worldwide, the production of cement alone accounts for about 5% of the global anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The CO2 emissions associated with Portland cement manufacturing falls into 3 main categories:

  1. CO2 derived from de-carbonation of limestone,

  2. CO2 from kiln fuel combustion,

  3. CO2 produced by vehicles in cement plants and distribution.

As a result of these measures, the general rule is that the creation of one ton of cement releases one ton of CO2 into the atmosphere.
